I have a 1941 Special Deluxe. The interior is gray, on all surfaces. Even the back side of stuff is gray. And the steering wheel is gray molded plastic. Is this original?  If so, why?  I would prefer woodgrain, but if gray is original, I'll keep it gray.

If you're a club member you can do a Roster search using the link at the top of the page. You can search for members with the same year car; by state; by name. You'll get their contact information and get answers from the 'horse's mouth'. Club members also have free access to Technical Advisors. They are listed in the Members section and in the club magazine.

As Tiny mentions please consider joining the VCCA, our monthly publication is worth the price of the dues.  In the meantime, I’ll try to answer your questions with a series of pictures and a link.  I have never known of a 1941 with gray interior. Attached is a link to the official GM Heritage page for 1941 Chevrolets.  While it is many pages long, you will find mentioned in several places the Special Deluxe dash being straight grain woodgrain on top and a contrasting color on the lower and other parts such as the steering wheel and column. The document also mentions two tone cloth for the seats.

Here are some pictures that should help. First are pictures of the dash in my 41 Special Deluxe convertible.  Straight grain woodgrain on the top and the tan/pink paint from Chevs of the 40’s on the bottom.  The colors and pattern are fairly close to what I observed on the original dash in areas that were not subject to aging. The steering wheel and horn cap are original 41.  Sorry for the shadows.

Lastly are pictures of a 41 Master Deluxe that I restored many years ago. At the time, Hampton Coach was still in business and only reproduced the two tone cloth for the Special Deluxe so that’s what I used.  Note the matching headliner, it too came from Hampton Coach.  Also note how close the seat cloth colors compliment the paint on the dash.  Kindly disregard the off color fabric on the seat back and arm rest area, at the time I had to compromise since I was still buying shoes for the kids.  Hope this helps.  Mike
