I just came across a bench seat out of a 36 truck. I know that the cabs are very similar and was wondering if anyone new if the 36 would fit in the 38 cab? Thanks!
Martin,
The problem you might encounter is that only the 1938 gas tank has the filler neck exiting the cab behind the passenger side door. To accomplish this, the tank has a "tunnel" that starts inboard at the back, and angles up to connect to the neck that sticks through the cab corner. Only the '38 passenger side cushion has a relief to accommodate this feature on the tank. 1936 and 1937 under seat tanks are flat on top. The cushions for my 1936 1-1/2 ton truck have sheet metal bottoms. The cushions in my 1938 trucks are open on the bottom, as were a set of 1937 cushions that I once had. I don't believe I have any extra 1938 springs.
I just sold a 1938 1/2 ton that we have owned for most of the last 53 years. I have some experience with these trucks. Feel free to contact me at ml.russell1936@gmail.com

Weren't there high cabs in early '36 and low cabs in late '36?
Were the seats even the same between those two?

The seats are different between high cab and the low cab truck bodies, the low cab seat should work in the 38 cab.
@35mike Thanks Mike! I have many questions regarding my old 37. Stay tuned, I'm sure you will be hearing from me again. MC
@garage-art Martin, Have we changed from 1938 to 1937. 1936 seat should fit a 1937.
Patrick might help us out here but 1936 Pickups might have a one piece cushion. Their tanks were mounted between the frame rails at the rear of the truck. Only the 1-1/2 ton trucks in 1936 used the under seat tank. If that was not confusing enough, there were two different under seat tanks. One, like mine, required removal of the passenger side cushion for re fueling, the other one had a filler neck sticking out through a notch in the seat riser on the passenger side. This arrangement required an indented area in the door panel to clear the neck/cap. This indention is present on all (?) 1936 Chevy truck LH door panels. regardless of tank location/type.
While we are talking about 1936 door panels, I might as well mention that they have another feature which distinguishes them from the 1937/1938 panel. The 1936 door used a leather check strap to limit door travel. Because of the footman loop that attaches the strap to the door, there is a difference in the panel at the front. 1937 and 1938 doors had a metal check strap built in.
1937 tanks were all under the seat, without the filler neck and therefore requiring RH cushion removal for refueling. They differed from the 1936 under seat tank in that a vent was added to send fumes out of the cab through a vertical tube.
I hope this is more information about 1936/1937/1938 Chevy truck fuel tanks than anyone ever wanted to know. This is what happens when you ask a question of an old man who has no life and is obsessed with old Chevy trucks. I need help!!

@35mike It is a 37 but taking a closer inspection of it, the cab was in a very rusted condition requiring way more work and expense than I could deal with. I came across a 38 cab in very usable condition and am going with that.I guess I have 2 options here. Patch the gas port as a 37 would be or modify or find a 38 bench seat. I am leaning toward leaving it with the gas port outside the vehicle which to me seems more practical.

Currently a 37, not in great shape. and a 38 in about the same condition. 38 tanks are pretty hard to find so I am thinking of modifying a 37 tank as someone mentioned in another forum.
Mike is correct, the GMC bottom cushion is a one piece since there is no tank in the cab. The same for the door, 36 had the leather check strap, 37 and above an metal check. The high cab 36 was pretty much a 35 with a few changes but nothing carried over to the 36 low cab. In person I tend to copy Mike in replying to questions, in that I keep yapping beyond my allotted time.
My Aus built 38 RHD 1/2 ton has the under seat tank with the filler exiting the cab on the left side past a cut out in the rear corner of the 1 piece seat base.

@dunfire On the odd chance that this horse is not dead yet, (highly unlikely) I believe I noticed in the Master parts catalog that the inner door panels for 1936 high and low cab, are the same. This implies that the bottom portion of all truck doors from 1934 through 1938 are the same shape.
Don't think about it too long. I did and my head started to hurt.

The single seat bottom cushion will work
