New guy here, working on getting my '48 Fleetmaster on the road. We just painted the door jambs and edges and we can't figure out the hinge side weather strip. I bought the Steele kit and I have the Shop manual. I do not have the metal retainer as it was rusted out and I threw it away 27 years ago when I took the car apart. Which explains why I have no recollection of how it goes. I plan on just gluing the new piece on. Can anyone provide a couple pics of it one the car? I'm sure I can get it close, but want it to be perfect so I have no leaks. Any suggestions or tips would be welcome as well.
Thanks,
Walt (48Builder)
here's the cowl with paint on it
@ruscar That fantastic! Thank you! I'm going to glue mine on and hope for the best without the retaining strip
@ruscar - I'm still figuring this out. On the hinge strips from Steele there is a perfectly flat side that seems to me would be the one that gets glued down, but in order to do that I'd have to use the piece marked "L" on the right side door. Can you confirm if the flat side of eh rubber gets glued down or is it the side that has a slight "bend" in it?

This is the driver side door. If you look close at the notch around the door stop I think you can see how it fits. That other pic is at the top where it meets the piece above the door. Click on pic to enlarge. If you need more let me know.
Yes it was tricky for me too. If the screw holes for the metal retainer are still there you can sort of use them as a guide in the first pic I posted.

Walt, I noticed you’re from Central NY as am I. My contact information is in my profile if you would like to contact me. If you’re near me you can come and look at my 48 station wagon that has the Steele rubber installed with the correct retainers. Mike
@tiny Yes, they sent me that with the parts and maybe I'm thick but I found it of little help. I even called them and all they told me was the end of the hinge piece would match up perfectly with the top of the door piece, which it doesn't. I think I'm good now but I wish I had the retaining strips as added insurance that it will stay in place.
That pic around the top of it is a big help. That will tell me which side is glued down. I only have 3 of the holes remaining and will make something I can use to help hold it down. Thanks a lot for the additional pics. We're aligning the hood and front fenders now and then it's time for paint!

That too was a real challenge for me to get it where I was satisfied.

Went up to Minetto's place yesterday to look at the weatherstrip on a door. He convinced me to make the retaining strip which I did today. Will take it to paint shop tomorrow to see if I got it right. He was gracious enough to show me his car collection and then gave me some staples to use for attaching the weatherstrip to retainer.
Got paint on the body yesterday and finished welding the bolts on my bumper today so I can get it to the chrome shop. Getting close now.
@ruscar Thanks again for even more help. Next question for you, or anyone, is the trunk weatherstripping. I found an article regarding 49 and newer whereby the body piece is not run all the way around the channel in order to allow water to run out. Are 48's done the same way? I sectioned my trunk lid and put a channel all the way around the bottom so I don't know if that is relevant to me. My replacement W/S has a little lip that I believe goes over the inside edge of the channel, with the section that compresses going toward the outside.
Sometimes I wonder why I wanted to customize this thing.
