My starter came apart. The spring at the end of the shaft was intact. My question is. Is there another spring betweeen the sprocket and starter
Hopefully this picture helps from my '16. Just the Bendix spring on the end. Let me know if you'd like more/different photos of it.
Thank you! I believe your comment is correct. The book on servicing the starter did not show or mention another spring. The reason I asked is because the person fixing the starter thought there was a spring. Since the whole end came apart from the shaft, the sprocket hid in a crossmember and there was no spring to be found. I appreciate the work you have done in providing a picture.
fyi - The starter bendix that I have on my most recent starter can on my early cars can be bought on amazon. It's similar to a Massey Ferguson tractor starter.
There is not much that makes a starter drive spring specific to the common applications. When your starter kicks the drive in from the front of the flywheel, the spring will be wound as if it has right hand threads. If the starter drive pulls in from the back side of the flywheel (Model T, A, Ford and V8s too, I think) the spring will appear as having left hand threads. The diameter of the spring is another factor as is the number of coils. There are Chevy and Ford springs that look exactly the same, except for the RH/LH feature. They are often described wrong on eBay.
