I Bought the 54 Belair

I went over to my bud's house to help him with a few chores and took another look at the 54. Just could not resist buying it...so, she's mine.  I said it had 37k miles but in fact it shows 38k. He wasn't the original owner, but you can look at an older car and pretty much see the difference between 37 and 137k miles. The body is straight as a pin and there's no rust except for surface rust on some of the underside. The floors and trunk are solid...lots of new parts including a NOS sun visor. A full set of NOS hub caps come with it. It needs tires since it's been sitting on flats for at least 8 years. It also comes with a new fuel tank and hood springs and a bunch of other parts.

So, it has power steering, power brakes, Power Glide. Funny, it was a California car with heater delete. That's ok, because I will put a Vintage AC/heater in it after I get it running and put back together. Here's some pics:

Looks like a good buy. A couple of tires and other minor repairs makes for an easy restoration. Enjoy the ride

@anthony-williamson Thanks, Tony...it does look like a fairly easy task to get it on the road. I'm excited. Hard to believe I'm excited to have an in-line 6 cylinder, 115 horsepower, and Power glide???? Yep, today I sold my 2023 Camaro LT1 with near 500HP and within hours, bought a 70 year old with a quarter mile time of 21 seconds and a zero to 60 mph in 17.1 seconds. My Camaro would almost double the speed and able to run the quarter mile twice in the same time...lol..what was I thinking? Well, a 54 chevy 210 2 door was my high school car and one my wife to be and I spent many hours cruising in it.

I like the idea of buying the 54 but wish you had given me the Camaro though. Are you sure you only cruised in the earlier 54?

Nice car.  I prefer the older cars with their original drive trains.   They have a 'personality' modern cars do not.  You can go down the road and watch the world go by.  Modern cars you are in a cocoon blocking out the world as you are transported at speed from A to B.  There is also alot to be said for being able to work on a car with a basic set of tools.

@timothy-kruger You're right about that. Of course, I wasn't at a driving age when the 1941 was offered, but I was born in that year. However, the 54 was my high school cruiser until I got my first V8 while in my final year. There is a draw to the older six cylinder cars which I can't exactly explain. I like the sounds of the transmission and drive train and the fact that no one pressures me to race them or otherwise drive faster. The 54 is going to be pretty slow on acceleration but that's ok, I wouldn't drive it if I were in a hurry. My 55 has a 400hp V8 and 4 speed Muncy and even there, I don't drive it hard. I'm excited to get the 54 home and start working on it. I ordered the tires and tubes for it since I'll need them to get the car home. I only live a couple blocks over from where the car is being stored and I have an aluminum car hauler trailer with a winch. Now trying to decide if I want to add AC and heat. That decision has to be made before I get it running since I'll need a battery. I'm thinking about borrowing the Optima out of the 41 to get the 54 up and running and after everything checks out there, make the decision on AC/heat. It's a California car without heater.

Well, I found a little more history about the 54. My good friend that I'm buying it from knew the original owner who bought it in California and drove it to Tennessee. I think he was ill with cancer when he arrived in TN. He passed away and the car sat for some time at his residence. His widow eventually sold the car to my friend about 8 years ago. I'm not sure how long it has been since it ran with the original owner. However, the mileage or 38k was confirmed at the time my friend bought it. It certainly doesn't appear to have more mileage on it.

@jerry-berry The car looks great. I must say, I've seen dual carb's before but not dual oil filters. I believe (not sure) in '54 a heater was still a dealer or owner installed accessory, not factory installed.

@ruscar One of them is the oil filter and the larger front one is the reservoir for the power steering system. When I first saw it, I was thinking the same thing...lol. Funny thing, the power brake master cylinder is why the car is apart. I'm assuming I have to fix whatever is wrong with that to make the brakes work. In my research, I can find references to the power brakes as an option, but can't find a rebuild kit or a refurbished one. The guy I bought it from says the same system is on the 54 Corvette. I can't find pics of it anywhere.

 A friend in the club that we see on tours bought a 54 Belair that was low miles and had power steering power brakes and powerglide. He was planning on installing A/C but with power steering and the 2 grove crank pulley he did not find a way to get an ac compressor to work. He sold the car to someone else we tour with and bought a 52 and was able to put ac in that one.

I went over to look at the car again today and took a few pics and one of them is pretty exciting since it shows a service tag on the door with a date on it. I needed to look at the power brake booster to see what kind of parts I might need. The dash looks great. I didn't take a pic of it but the upholstery look pretty darn good as well. Serial number and data plate are kind of important. The service tag shows the mileage on 9/11/79 at 36,339, a pretty good indicator of original mileage of 38,630 miles 45 years later. I'm pleased with the car.

@ruscar Gosh, how did you find that, I searched everywhere I thought and couldn't find it. Pricey, but the rebuild kit seems very reasonable.  Yes, it's exactly like mine...I went over today and took pics:

@jerry-berry I'm a little surprised they put 30wt oil in it instead of 10w30.

I would call the seller on Ebay to confirm that is the correct rebuild kit. Just to be on the safe side. Good luck.

I just Googled "1954 Chevrolet power brake booster".
