I was cleaning the frame of grease and dirt and found some letters and a date stenciled on the drivers side between the running board supports. Looks like AOS 5/28/31 and some others that are too far gone to read. Can someone tell me the significance of these markings and maybe a clue to the ones that are too faded to read? I am trying to insert the image below, but if it doesn't work, a photo is online at http://31chevyproject.shutterfly.com/719.

"AOS" means "A.O. Smith", and that company made the 1931 Chevrolet frame, among others.
A.O. Smith Corporation is still in business to this day the A.O. Smith Corporation is one of the world' s leading manufacturers of residential and commercial water heating equipment. They also manufacture electric motors as well.
A.O. Smith also made the first pressed steel automobile frames back in 1899.

AOS = A.O. Smith company. They made frames for Chevrolet and others . They had a plant here in Milwaukee untill a few years ago. They still make hot water heaters and some other things. 5-28-31 = May 28, 1931, the date the frame was made.

Thanks to you both. Any idea what might have been after the date?

The 1928 is 1/2 inch and I bet yours is the same. The final info on my rail was "NA.". Best guess is that in my case it was for National which is what my car is.
