I have a 1931 5 window Sports Coupe with a rumble seat. I am having difficulty locating the vehicle identification number. I and the CHP representative working with the DMV looked under the seat and we were unable to locate it there. Any suggestions? Thank you!!

The car serial number plate was located under the front floor mat just in front of the front seat frame on the passenger side wood main sill facing the door. It was held in place with four little nails, and this plate is usually missing due to either the nails falling out or from wood rot on the main sill.

Remember also that California used the engine serial number rather than the body serial number for registration purposes at that time: so if you are looking for a specific number, try the engine.

It could very weel be that the chassis number was put at another place in USA, and elsewhere, but it was stamped on an ID Data plate which was fastened on the firewall, right side of engine room on Scandinavian assembled cars.

In the USA, on the 1929-32 closed cars, the car serial number was stamped on a plate that was nailed to the right side wood main sill under the floor mat by the door. On the open cars the serial number plate was located on the front seat "kick-up", passenger side. The car serial number was not stamped on the frame or any other location.

For the Fisher Body passenger cars the body number was located on the Fisher Body plate that was riveted to the cowl under the hood.

The engine serial number was stamped on a machined pad on the engine block behind the fuel pump. And, the same number was also stamped on the engine block on the machined flange under the push rod cover.
