I have three 1-1/2 ton Chevrolet 4x4's built for the US Government. One is a 1941, one is a 1942, and my COE is a 1943-44. The '42 has been in my family since 1949. I have a title with the serial number on it for that one.
I have been told time and time again that Chevrolet did not stamp the serial number on the frame, just on a data plate in the cab that is usually all rusted and unreadable, or gone. I have about 25-30 other WWII trucks that have the serial number on a data plate and stamped on the frame usually right above the front axel.
Why wouldn't Chevrolet stamp the frame? Is the serial number stamped in a hard to find place on the frame? Anyone could remove the data plate, so I find it hard to believe there isn't another place to find the serial number on a chev truck.

There is evidence that the Canadian military trucks did indeed have the serial stamped on the frame.

Most vehicles down under had a identifying number stamped into the frame and this number is the 1 used for registation purposes. This number these days is partly issued by rego authority and partly by manufacturer. Total of 17 characters.
