Can the 3 speed transmission that was used in the 1941-1947 1/2 tons be used in a 1940 1/2 ton?

All of the internal parts are the same, the 40 model has the strange universal joint ball retaining collar that was a 1940 only item, but the later ball retaining collar could also be used behind the later transmission.
