Question....if the VIN numbers start at 001001 for 1956 trucks and the first three trucks off the line in Baltimore are a series 3A, 3B and 3C. Would they all have 001001 as there unit number or would they be 001001, 001002 and 001003?

Inquiring minds want to know.....

The vin. number would be 1-2-3 etc.....If it were a passenger car and each a different body style the BODY numbers would be the same .If the serial numbers (vin numbers) would be the same there would be no was to track the number produced---and to later ID the unit such as for owner registration etc.....This is my thoughts.Now it would be possible to own two cars with the same vin number except for the plant code number.Would that be rare?

I understand there is only one vin number and that they are never duplicated. But, if they all run in sequence with no regard for series type how would they know how many 3A (1/2 ton short bed) they made versus 5C (LCF)?

So, if I have serial number 8C56W003456 does that means it's the 2,456th (numbers start at 001001) truck from Willow Run in 1956 regardless of series or is it the 2,456th series 8C?

I'm still confused...

I think they had the following:
3A56W001001
3B56W001001
4A56W001001
7B56W001001
10A56W001001

At the end of the day they could just add the unit totals to come up with Plant gross total and still know by series.

Correct me if I'm wrong.....
