on the '40 kc 1/2ton, is there supposed to be a horn relay mounted just outboard of the voltage regulator?..

If the truck has the original single horn it has no relay.

chevgene,

thanks...meaning if we find a town & country, we'd also add the relay...

The accessory book indicates that the dual horns are mounted on the dash (fire wall).I believe that it would be safe to assume that te relay would be in that area also.

The horns are the same as what was used on 1940-48 cars. They are the sea-shell type, some '41 cars had a straight short projector .They mount to the fire wall with L brackets. They are mounted to the right side of the engine-one quite high and the other a couple of inches below. The relay placement would be what ever looks logical-best to keep it close to the horns.

lenn,

no, we have the upper areas pretty de-greased nowadays...however, plenty more gunk & goo on the lower latitudes...

chevgene,

do you mean the standard '40-'48 car horns or were they an accessory for them as well?..

Yes, the standard car horns were the truck accy. horns.

chevgene,

I've also seen some kc's with two really long horns suspended from the radiator-to-cowl supports...are those not correct?..

Those were the accy. horns for 1939 and older cars and trucks. The cars had only one horn as standard in those years.Starting in 1940 all cars had the short little dual horns that became the accy. horns for trucks. From 1940-52 the trucks used the dual horn set up and in 1953 the trucks came with one of the dual horns standard (the low note) and the accy. kit had just the Hi note horn.

chevgene,

thanks for all the information...

do all the car horns from '40 - '48 carry the same number & are they stamped...i.e. how will we be able to identify them if we see them?..

also, if we should be fortunate enough to find a set, what're they worth?..

I'm not sure if they had numbers stamped in them or not. Some have the last 3 digets of the parts number stamped but the number changed several times from 1940-48.The dome horn cover is on top (horizontal)and the projector, which is short, sticks out frontwards. Some '41-42 had the projector pointing down-you don't want those.A salvage yard or swap meet would be a place to try.Find a street rodder that has removed his.Value--not too much---$25.00 a pair if they work

They mount with a bracket that looks to be about 2" wide and 3" tall. Will have a little flange that sticks out on top to reach the studs on the horn.Looks as if 2 bolts attach each bracket to the fire wall. They look to be black as are the horns.

The " matched horn " accessory kit [ group # 2.810 part # 986099 ] was a truck option. I dont know if it wuz a car option, anyway these matched horns were of the " sea shell " design & were used in conjunction with the original horn that wuz mounted on the intake manifold.
