Does anyone know of a source to purchase a waterpump packing nut wrench for my 1929 chevy?

I have tried several wrench's but cannot find one to fit----I guess the nut is an odd-ball size?

Any help will be much appreciated.

The packing nut takes a 1" open end wrench and you can find the correct water pump wrench for sale on eBay from time to time. That's where I found mine! \:D \:D \:D \:D

pitman,

unless the '29 is different from the '30, like JunkYardDogJunkYardDog says, a 1" craftsman or snap-on fits...it just takes 12 moves to tighten one complete turn...just did it yesterday...1/12 turn from one side, flip the wrench and reset on other side of water outlet for the next 1/12 turn...

good luck,

epi

I use a stubby 1" open ended wrench with just a bit of lateral offset and then ground it down to be more "user friendly" It should not take a lot of torque to turn the packing nut. My Dad used what he called "Water Pump Pliers" or more modern term "Channel Locks" and now since many tool companys, even the Chinese use the politically correct term "Slip Joint Pliers" His had smooth jaws, and would not chew up the nut, I have an old pair that work fine.
I have seen old pictures of mechanics useing a small adjustable "monkey Wrench" , it don't work for me.

Hey Chevrolet! Yep, that's excatly how you do it with a Craftsman wrench. I have done it myself a zillion times until I bought my packing nut wrench. And, sometimes I still have to use my 1" Craftsman wrench to break the old packing nut loose! \:D \:D \:D \:D

Would the "new" smaller strap wrench work also?

JunkYardDogJunkYardDog I noticed that after several years of sitting unused the packing nuts get to be hard to break loose, I have used the big wrench and PB Blaster to free them up, I just love working on rusty dirty old junque stuff, engines carbs, starters generators and other Chevy parts when you get 'em freed up and cleaned up nice and shiny and you can see how they look new it makes me feel almost as good as having a new puppy! Almost,
