I'm currently working on making the correct Trico sidemount mirror's for the '31 and '32 Chevrolets. Dose anyone know if these mirrors were used on other years then '31 and '32? These mirrors will be as close to the orginal as I can get, including the metal strap and Trico markings. Is any one else interested in a pair of these mirrors? If there are please let me know. \:D

1928 (?) Cadillac used the same mirror, but the base mount was different. It was oval shaped instead of square. However, the rest of the mirror was the same. You already have me down for a pair.....with the lock cylinders please!

I was told at a car show that the oval base ones were used by Olds in this era?? I have a Trico mirror with this base. If there is a market, I could let you use the base for a pattern. I believe, Don Rumbaugh cast the chevy style several years ago but did not have the racheting w/s.s. strap setup but used a leather straps. Does anyone have a present source for the s.s. strap banding? Vintque, who makes repro parts for Fords in this era, has a mirror head that is very close to the Trico one. Same size with stem out the back for mounting like originals. Keep me posted-I would be interested in a pair.

Well I've been very busy and have not had time to look at Chevy chat much but I thought that I would post an update on the mirrors.

I just got the first castings for the mirrors and they look great. What do you think? (See below)

I started making the straps this weekend. I need to find Stainless Steel rivets, can anyone help on this?

Now the hard part starts, machining all the parts to work.

Also thanks for the nice post Don.

Bruce,
The casting looks real good. Sorry don't have a source for SS rivets. You will need a STRONG press to set them. I have used SS tubular rivets in the past and they seem to be 10x more difficult to get set than mild steel ones.
I will try to track some down if you get me the dimensions you are looking for. Have you considered cutting them from SS rod?

Hey Guys!

I need some help with some thing. I need to make a holder for machining the castings that I have. Does anyone know what I can use for a mold release? Also where can you get it? \:\(

Thanks for the help.

Bruce,
It depends on what you are going to use to make the holder. If it is molded and you use a slow curing epoxy then it will not get too hot and you can use plastic like Saran. I wouldn't use reqular plastic wrap as it melts at too low a temp.
Silicone grease can also be used if temp does not get too hot. You will need to check Dow Corning or GE on max temp.

About the mold release material, you may find a suitable agent from a good gunsmith supply company like Brownells, I don't have their address but they advertise in the National Rifleman and other gun hobby magazines,

Also they have a good material for casting molds ,it is an epoxy material used to bed rifle actions into the stock and is called Accraglass they have various size kits and it conforms exactly to the pattern piece, even to the proof marks and machine marks on the piece.

Mcmaster-Carr Supply at http://www.mcmaster.com has about anything you might need in the way of rivets, or anything else you can think of.
Also did you get permission from Trico to use their name? GM Ford and others are getting touchy about using a trademarked name, part# etc.

No update \:\( , need time to work on them! Also need to find or make a gear for them. \:\(

As for permission from Trico, are you going to tell? \:\( What they don't know will not heart them!

Hi Bruce, you may have already told them. Trico does still exist, don't they? It might be smart to check on possible trademark infringement. Some folks are just looking for an excuse to file a lawsuit.

Yes, Trico is a registered trademark, and I believe that you have to be licensed under GM to use it. \:D \:D \:D \:D

I'll cross that road when I get one working. They only have a copy right on the traid mark not the mirror its self!
