Ozjim sent me a couple of photographs of Dave Perry's V8 in Australia. I contacted Dave for a little history. Here's one picture and his story. The other picture is in a second post.
"I have wanted a 1918 Chevrolet V8 for many years and back in 94 on my first
trip to the USA there was a chance to look at one, although unrestored it
was the first V8 Chev that I had seen for real.
I studied that car for a long and knew that I had to find one for myself but
finding one that was for sale and at the price I could afford was going to
be very hard. Finding one that was complete enough to be restored made the
task even harder.
On my return to California to stay with Tom Meleo I had the chance to ride
in his and this only tormented me even more. Tom told me that he knew a guy
who had 2 Chev V8s and one was for sale. I chickened out and choose not to
go look at the car. Then again in 96 Tom tried to get me to go look at this
car again and once again I chickened out. Then in 97 the car was for sale in
the G&D and I rang and talked to the guy and it was the car Tom had been
trying to get me to go look at on my previous trips. So I rang Tom and I
bought the car and Tom and Ken Kaufmann went and picked up the car for me. I
paid for it and saw the photos of what I had bought after Tom had picked up
the car.
I had to wait another year and a half until I could get it to Australia.
Once here I was able to establish that it was a very complete car that
needed a complete last nut and bolt restoration.
As you can imagine there is lots of work and I have slowly been chipping
away at the task of rebuilding the car.
Ken Kaufmann has been able to date the car and it was built in December
1918.
The strange thing about this car is that the first time that I ever new that
Chevrolet made a V8 in 1917-1919 was back in 1975/76 when I was at a local
club meeting and one of the members was showing slides of a trip to America.
One of the slides was of a Chevrolet V8 in a storage building sitting
waiting to be restored. At the time the car was owned by Richard Shaffer I
think was his name. Well the car I have is that same car that I saw on that
night back at the club meeting.
This was meant to be.
Restoration is progressing at a steady pace but when you have 4 old other
cars already on the road and doing hose extensions time is hard to find to
get a lot done."

DAVE
