I just bought a 1923 chev 4 door sedan and I'm trying to id the engine and model. There is no title for numbers. I don't know if its a 490 or Superior. There is a steel id tag screwed on the head that reads F-14-23 and there are other raised numbers on the engine. The engine resembles the 490 by the pictures I've seen in shop manuals. Any Info anyone can give me would help a lot. This is my first oldie.

Hi Bill23,

Have never seen a tag screwed on the head. Take your time and give us ALL the numbers and marks on the head and the block. Look on the end of the seat riser for a black tag. Read any numbers visible on the flywheel.

This information is from the email I sent you previously.

The shell says your car is a 1923/24.

The date on the head: F 14 23 says your head was cast on 14 June 1923

You have an open flywheel and a cone clutch so that is pre-1925.

If you remove the seat (drivers) and look under it you may find the Fisher Body Job Number. I would guess this Fisher Job number to be 4950 or 4970.

I pulled the seat out and didn't see any tags or plates. I did see where there used to be a plate screwed into the seat riser on the passenger side but couldn't find it. The engine is froze up so I can't turn the flywheel over for markings, I'll have it off later and will look then. The seat is a bench seat and the back is shaped with sweeping ends. Someone told me one of the differences between a 23 & 24 was that the 23 had a dip in the front axle and the 24 was straight. Mine does have a dip. If there's any other pictures that might help, please let me know and I'll post them.
