The subject line says it all, how do you remove the gas gauge from the tank?. It looks as if it should screw off but if it does it ain't comin easy and I don't want to damage anything?

You are correct. The top ring screws off. I suggest you NOT use heat from an open flame to loosen it. A piece of leather wrapped around it and a pipe wrench may be the way to attack. If you could find an adjustable oil filter wrench may also work.

A pipe wrench only puts pressure on the two side that the jaws contact the cap, much like a vice does, wanting to crush the light gauge (thin metal)cap
