Does anyone remanufacture or rebuild the steering gears for the 490? Can the gears be bought separately? We have one with a lot of play and would like to "tighten" it up. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. TIA OKD

Hi Okiedude
First of all you need to work out what year model you have as there is different types. The early 1916-17 has a steering box mounted up on the firewall and the later models have the box mounted down on the chassis crossmember.
hope this helps for a start.

Thanks Twin4. I will post some pics tonight or tomorrow. Here is the problem for ID purposes. The steering column is in a 1927 Model T speedster, this was a modification by the previous owner and we have just recently purchased the car. I know, we are not supposed to mix Chevy and **** parts, but I did not do it. Once I add pics maybe that will help. OKD

I think the problem with your steering gear is the proximity to a F*O*R*D engine. That unit will be a hard find. It is very early 490.

Hi Okiedude
Just get a machine shop to cut you some new gear as you will be hard pressed to find replacement or NOS gears. Be aware that the 1916 early 1917 box that you have in the car is very direct when the new gears are fitted and there is very little play which makes steering a little sudden. It will be interesting to see what type of front spring arrangement the car has fitted.
