On the top of the front window glass there are two brackets attached to the metal frame that lifts the glass. These brackets have a flat upward extension on them. When installing the glass which side of the glass are they located, toward the body (wiper linkage) or toward the interior (back of header) ?

Also;
I have the Steele rubber side pieces that the front glass slides in. Does the curved finished end go on the outside or does the flat extended end get squeezed into the outside stainless window trim? Another little detail, these side pieces seem too wide for the 1/4" glass. Is there supposed to be a felt inside of them?

Sounds complicated, but thanks for any help you can give me. I'm trying to finish off the interior and my header is ready for mounting so I figured I'd better take care of the windshield first.

Thanks,
RayG

Ray,
I was just there last week repairing a vacumm leak, could have taken some pictures. Anyway, if my memory is right, this is what I had on my windshield. The top of the windshield had a metal frame going across and on the top was two risers for the regulator to fit in to raise the windshield. On each side of the glass was also a metal channel to slide in the side rubbers. Those side pieces of rubber had a flat L shape on one side and the other was rounded. The flat side faced the interior so when you installed the trim pieces they would butt up to it. Now without the metal pieces on the side of the windshield you will have a lot of side play(loose as a goose). The reveal mldg that goes around also has a rubber that slides into it,which is a bear to install. The lip faces the glass to seal it.

The seal set I got from Steel Rubber was 70-0017-52 of their catalog dated in 2002.

Hope this helps
Leo

Leo;
Thanks a lot. I didn't know that there are side pieces to the glass. Is your car a '32? My windshield has only a top metal channel with the risers for lifting. Nothing is on the sides only the raw edge of the glass. Could the metal channel that you refer to be the stainless trim reveal that bolts to the inside of the metal body? Could that be where the rubber side channels go. If not then I'm missing them.
I have the rubber that fits into the reveal. Does that go continuously from the side over the top and down the other side, or does it only go across the top and down both sides ending just below the bends in the reveal?
Yes, my window has lots of play side to side. I have heard that a felt channel fits into those side rubbers.
Do you or anyone else have an exploded view of this area? I don't have the Fisher Body Supplement for 1932 and it's still out of print as far as the last time I checked with the Filling Station.
Thanks RayG

"Could the metal channel that you refer to be the stainless trim reveal that bolts to the inside of the metal body?"

No. As Leo mentioned there are two metal side channels that are attached to the windshield glass and the windshield glass, in turn, slides up and down on felt-lined rubber channels that are in the windshield pillars. Sounds like you are missing the two metal windshield channels.

Ray,
Yes I do have a 32 Coach, I call it the "Big Dig 2". I named it after the Boston Big Dig, it seems like I keep digging for the $100.00 bills.

The rubber for the Reveal Mldg goes all around the mldg.Start at one end and go the the other.

If I remember correctly while searching for parts somebody sells channels for the windows and if you could get your hands on a picture of one you could make it work.

I looked at the pictures I have and that is one area that I don't have. \:\( \:\(

Thanks Leo and JunkYardDogJunkYardDog.
It sure looks like I am missing those two metal channels. No wonder I can't figure this out!
I know the windshield was replaced at some point in my car's former life. They must have lost them then.
...I just checked in the FS catalog and on pg 143 they list GR-271 "31-32 Closed car side windshield guide metal sliders"... Correct?

Yep, that sounds like them. However, did you see "Temp. Out" next to the listed parts? Well.......that means there is a good chance that the manufacturer won't make them again in your lifetime. \:\( ;\)

Yep that's the March catalog.
But the August catalog lists them at 12.95/pr. That's good...
...but the Web Site catalog dosen't give a price. That's bad...

Hey bad Dog, how 'bout digging up a pair for this puppy, you must have a zillion 32 front windshields burried somewhere under the barn.

Obviously you mean the August, 2005 catalog since the August, 2006 catalog isn't out yet.....or not that I am aware of anyway.

Nope, don't have any of those windshield metal channels. Those are what we call a "perishable" item, which means that they are missing on other cars as well.

Oh yeah the March catalog is the latest one I have. Sorry 'bout that. Time to throw out the outdated catalogs.
Guess I just have to find something that works. March 2006, pg 131 shows a lower sash channel. Might it be something like that? Gonna check that 9/16" dimension to see if it fits in the rubber side piece. Don't look like there will be room left for the felt. I'll be back...

Check with Gary Wallace, I think he has parts for the regulators.

9/16" is too big. I did find some one sided felt laying around that I can glue into the inner side of the Steele side rubbers. That should take up the front to back movement. However, I still need to take up the side to side movement. Oak shims between the body and side rubbers?

Again...Anyone have an extra pair of these window sliders?

Ray, check out 1931 Roadsters post "can anyone tell me what these parts are". Picture #1 shows a channel for glass the looks like what your looking for. Looking at top left of the channel it is trimmed the same as the ones on my 32.Looking at my 32 and measuring the side up to the reveal mdlg it is 13 1/4". It's possible that that the windshield is an inch higher. You would have to measure you glass.

I saw that roadster posting. I thought of the same thing so I saved a copy of the picture.

Would that part be the same for some other GM cars? If so then that might expand your search chances.
