I am getting ready to put new upholstery in the thirty one standard sedan ,and I noticed that it has two rows of buttons on the seats, one row on top and one row along the front, like a deluxe . this car is totally origional 59,000 miles and I think dad was second owner. and its been in the family thirty five years . All the old mohair looks the same ,dosent look like it was changed but there is two row of buttons, could this have been a factory screwup ? Should I put them back in ? The upholstery kit was purchased in 1980 still in the boxes ,and there are fifty buttons in a bag . so there is enough. any ideas?

I don't know the answer to your question, though I'm certain someone will. BUT...what a dilema! I don't think it would be out of the question to think that the factory may have run short of STD. seats one day and substituted some DLX seats to keep the assembly line moving...or that the original owner paid a couple of extra bucks for the nicer seats...but...assuming this is how the car was delivered by the factory, how will you ever convince the judges that you didn't screw up when you did your upholstery!?

Thats what I have been thinking about, it looks nice but I know it is not proper and this could be a very high point car. [still has all the factory wood] never had any rust ,even factory stencils on frame.

It wouldn't suprise me at all if they made a screw up they still screw up today. My grandma's 2003 saturn came with leather on the left back passenger door and cloth on the drivers side back door. I would use the deluxe and tell the judges if they ask factory screw up they might not believe you but its a great story to tell.

Page 55 of the 1931 Engineering Features states in the last sentence "The seat Cushions have two rows of buttons"..Dosen't mention any thing about DeLuxe models. Is this correct? If it is you have documentation that yours is correct

Chevygene I have the Engineering Features and never read that sentance until now . Must be old age or something like that. That is a good point to follow so I will have two set of buttons.Hampton Coach list only single buttons for standard sedans in there catalog ,Were the later standards only made with one set? My car is an early model [chrome cowl band] car.

Hey, I have the answer. I went thru the same thing last year. My 40k car had the original interior with two rows of buttons on the front seat. I worked with Hampton Coach and ordered my kit. In the Hampton instructions it says all 31's, Deluxe or Standard had two rows of buttons on the front seat. They are the best so I went with it.
