I had the same experiance when we bought our 68 Impala that had set in a garage for several years before it was hauled home and everything was serviced, brakes, transmission modulator valve and a new tranny filter change of coolant, oil and ATF, differential and a new set of Goodyear tires, while I was doing the "get ready to drive" I bought a nos fuel gauge & sending unit and a dash unit on eBay. but once I started driving the car and added a couple tankfuls of Premium and a pint of MMO at each fill, LO and Behold! the original gas gauge started working!...Now I have a spare set.The only problem was several months later, when I started using the A/C on a tour trip the fan clutch tried to kick in on a hot day, froze up and knocked out the fan clutch and the water pump bearings. One of our club members that was trailering his 60 2 door HT unloaded his car and we loaded the 68 on his trailer to take to the tour hotel, I got parts at a local NAPA store( overnight delivery)and with the 68 still on the trailer, several club members and I replaced the bad parts, when it was fixed We offloaded it from the borrowed trailer and drove it 400 miles back home.
