Hiyas...

so my dad is rewiring his '53 1/2 ton chevy truck... which has a '57 235(inline six), so he's doing the 12v swap over dance.

On the 12v generator, there is a bolt with a wire attached to it... I thought I'd ask what it is for.

This picture linked below shows my finger pointing at a bolt with a wire coming from it, what is this for? What attaches to it?

Thought I'd ask...

thanks folks,

Too bad you didn't pan back with the camera so we could see the origin of the wire. Typically, that bolt is used to mount the suppressor condenser for prevention of radio "hash".

The wire goes to that bolt and the other end is clipped off hanging into space.

on this image here:

You can see the end of the wire out of focus and all fuzzy.

Heya AntiqueMechanic,
what exactly is a 'suppressor condenser' anyway? I get that it keeps the noise outta the radio... but where does it wire to on the other end?

The condenser is mounted on the generator with the bolt you picture. The pigtail from the condenser is attached to the same post as the large wire from the battery/voltage regulator. It is the post in line with the bolt. On your picture of the generator not mounted it would be the post inline with the screw shown in the picture.

The purpose of the condenser is to eliminate the "hash" produced by the brushes moving across the armature.

The wire was used as a ground. It has been cut-off.Some 1955-57's had these. Will work OK with out it usually. Some times they were added in when generator was having charging problems. Was also used for mounting the radio condenser if a radio was installed.
