Can a volt gauge directly replace an Amp gauge, or do you have to have different wiring? Any replies appreciated

the usual wireing of an amp gauge is for the guage to be wired in series with the main supply from the generator(+M-) to the battery and a volt meter will be wired in parallel from the (+ M ground) other words the current must go thru the meter to the battery with an amp meter and thru the meter to ground with a volt meter. some amp meters are wired by having the insulated wire going thru a pickup loop at the back of the ampmeter without having a terminal connection.
