I was testing a generator that I had just rebuilt. I was getting a noise that I could not locate when I spun it by hand. I did find the noise, it ended up that there was to much Glyptal on the pole shoes. I motored the generator, using a 8 amp battery charger after about 20-30 seconds the overload in the charger poped. I can't seem to figure out the current draw when a 35 amp generator is motored. I can't seem to find a HP rating. I just want to make sure that the unit is fine.

How did you connect the terminals? + to the armature or field or to both armature and field?

John, I would think a 12 volt generator running on an 8 amp Charger could draw quite a few amps, depending upon the load on the armature, or the drag on the armature. It would be simular to a 12 v starter running without being engaged to the flywheel. Just holding the pully should really take the amperage, I would think.
I would expect what happened to you is normally what should happen. It should be OK.

PS I usually motor a generator with a car battery.

Negitive was connected to the frame, positive to the armature. I never like to use a battery the first time because the lack of a fuse, for those just in case situations. I just was wondering what the draw would be I think I am fine also, but I want to make sure.

John, that is a good idea! I will correct my ways, next time I need to test anything with 12 volts, My 10 amp, 50 amp charger on 10 amps should work!
Why I mentioned I use a battery ,is that they always have plenty of amps ! And that they always have a good steady dc voltage, some chargers have a square wave so called dc output.

John,I work with this type generato all the time.unfortunatly I always have access to a test bench and do not check them in this manner, but I will chech a known good unit this way and give you the amperage draw.I don't work tomarrow, but will get it to you sat. afternoon.

Good luck \:D \:D \:D
