John, I would think a 12 volt generator running on an 8 amp Charger could draw quite a few amps, depending upon the load on the armature, or the drag on the armature. It would be simular to a 12 v starter running without being engaged to the flywheel. Just holding the pully should really take the amperage, I would think. I would expect what happened to you is normally what should happen. It should be OK.
PS I usually motor a generator with a car battery.

John, that is a good idea! I will correct my ways, next time I need to test anything with 12 volts, My 10 amp, 50 amp charger on 10 amps should work! Why I mentioned I use a battery ,is that they always have plenty of amps ! And that they always have a good steady dc voltage, some chargers have a square wave so called dc output.
