I installed Halogen head light kits on my 33 many years ago. They kept blowing 30 amp. fuses so I didn't use them. I would like to get them working.

They are hooked up to an original light switch. A new wiring harness was installed at the time the lights were installed.

The Lights work for a while until the fuse heats up and blows.

What do I have to do to make the lights work properly? I would like to keep them if possible.

Either you have a short or the load is too much for the 30 amp fuse. You can tie in another fuse in tandem with the present fuse.In other words get a fuse holder and splice one end of wire before the present fuse and one other end after.I would use a 10 amp fuse in the new holder bring the total up to 40 amps.

The Halogen bulbs do draw more amps...by some chance are the high and low beams on at the same time?

Are you refering to 6 or 12 volt?
An in line relay will nearly always cure the problem. Some late model light switches will sometimes cure the problem but the relay is the safest cure.

Chevgene - Adding a tandem fuse sounds like a good idea. The high and low beams seem to work independently.

DD - I should have mentioned that the car has a 6 volt system. Where would I get a 6 volt relay and how do I install it?

Thanks, Rich James

Your lights may be a more high amperage draw than the stock units, use a relay near the headlight and use a heavy wire from the battery to the relay and then to the headlight, a smaller wire should be ok for the control voltage wire used to activate the relay, just remember that even with a relay the battery drain will be large and your battery will not likely remain at full charge, unless the generator capacity is increased, like with an alternator. Many of us only drive a minimum of miles at night with the old cars and don't need th increased lighting.

As for a 6 volt relay try any of the vintage car vendors for a six voltheadlight relay, they need to be of an output greater than the amperage than the headlights. I would mount the relay near the headlight and also as near the battery as possible.

You are welcome, I hope that you get the headlights to perform up to your expectations.
