When starting a cold engine everything works fine. After driving a while and everything is warmed up to normal the starter turns over very slow. Do you suspect the starter or the battery?

When cold, with a meter on the battery the voltage does not drop. When hot the voltage drops to almost "0" when trying to start.

I would suspect starter. My guess is the bushes have worn allowing the armatuer to drop slightly and with heat expansion is rubbing on the pole shoes (poling). In any case a good clean and set of bushes isnt going to hurt the starter and the cost wont hurt your pocket much.

The simple way to start is to check for proper sized 6V cables of at least 01 for the positive. Next check the connections for corrosion. Follow this up with a look at the battery to make sure it has enough CA, there is a reference to the capacity of the battery in the archives. Some one will recall this number. My 52 had a large positive cable so I felt that it was proper for 6 volt, the cable started to corrode internally and when I peeled back the insulation there in hiding was a 12V cable. Replaced this with a proper 01 built for me at the local automotive eletctric shop and maintaining clean contacts the hard start problem went away. Maybe found a home in your garage.

A good first test is to try to start the engine a few times and then touch the terminals and connections on the battery and where the cables attach. If the cable or connection is warm or hot then there is a resistance at that location. If the cable is warm then it is not large enough. Clean connections, replace cables until it all remains near ambient temperature and it will start!

Thanks for your suggestions. I have new cables from the Filling Station. Relative new battery. I think I'll change the starter.

I don't know what the FS sells for 6 volt battery cables but the correct cable will be almost as large in diameter as your heater hose.I get my cables from a farm supply store....and they are very reasonable in cost but have a plastic insulation.
