The condenser on the generator is the most important device available for reducing hash and spark noise. The powder is no longer needed in the tires as they now contain traces of graphite that serves the same purpose. This leaves generator hash and ignition popping as the only items that must be addressed. The ignition noise can be reduced/eliminated by the use of resistive wires or resistor plugs. In addition the hood must make constant contact with the car body to act as a shield. In most cases a ground wire is run from the cowl to the back bolt on the valve cover. Noise was one of the early nemeses that plagued the popularity of the auto radio.

Ray, very informative. I learn every day from this site. Heck there should be a fee for this much knowledge.

My 41 has the Short Wave radio and I have a ground strap from the Firewall to the Valve cover. Should the car have another ground strap ?? If the car should have another ground strap, where would it connect ?

I will check my "hood" position & my condenser. But I think the hood is secure.

I ask this because on occasion I get the "popping" noise you mention when driving my car with the radio on. It kind of seems like it happens when I grab or touch the volume/on-off knob {?}

Thanks as always

If you have a radio installed in your vintage car it would be very helpful if you had the Owners Manual for your specific radio model. This book shows how to mount the radio. Also,the nice part about the book is that it shows a picture of every noise suppressor necessary to make the radio operate at its peak efficiency and eliminate most/all of the noise.

Each Owners Manual is specific to a particular radio model number and not to the car. For example, there are 4 different manuals for the 1941 car and truck.

Most Owners Manuals are available in reprint.
