Can someone tell me how to replace the speedo gears in a 28 tranny?

Years ago I could rebuild the trannys in a 40's or early 50's chevy. Repeat...years ago. But it's not like I am completely inexperienced in this area.

I would think replacing these gears wouldn't be too much trouble.

Thanks.

rbl2,
The main gear and the driven gear? I have a couple of complete 28 transmissions in the garage, I will look in the shop manual and then if the text isn't too clear I will check on one of the spares, I bought the transmissions two years ago to rebuild and haven't touched them yet. (I haven't done a lot of what I wanted to for a year.) \:\(

I'm not doin much of anything either. I was a very active person until a few months ago and now all I can do is pretty much watch the grass grow. That's a very difficult transformation in lifestyle for me.

If changing those gears requires removing the tranny I'll have to get my son to do it.

Rbl2, I don't think it will be necessary to pull the transmission. the transmission is qite accessable from underneth the car and also when the floorboard is removed. To get to the main speedometer gear I am sure the torque tube bell connector can be slid back and the U joint parted.

That much is true. What I don't know is what happens when I pull that part of the tranny off?

Are there a zillion needle bearings to be concerned with? (propably)

Will the gears need to be pressed onI'm not about to take that tranny apart until I am confident that I can handle the job.

rbl2, first are you sure the problem is in the gears, or is part of yours missing?.

Looks simple enough to me, The directions are in the 1928 repair manual.
No needle bearings in this part, you don't need to get into the gear case itself.

First remove the driven gear from the right rear of the tranny, before you part the torque tube and U joint. It has a hex sided place to put a box end wrench, it appears much like the 49-54 driven gear housing. this will keep from stripping the small driven gear when you pull the front U joint half. It appears, to me, that the main speedometer gear will come out with the front U joint yolk off the splined rear transmission shaft. The speedometer gears look like they are inside the U joint front bell housing.

rbl2,
The easiest method is to drop the brake cross shaft. One end is all that is needed but both allow the torque tube to be lowered further. You will also need to take the support off the transmission. Then take the bolts out of the u-joint ball housing ring. Put a pan under and push the housing back to reveal the u-joint. Note the amount of lube that drains out. If less than 1/2 pint then check the propeller shaft for up and down movement.

Take off the four nuts and washers holding the u-joint yoke together. Carefully separate the u-joint. Take the cotter pin out of the hex nut holding the front 1/2 of the u-joint to the back of the transmission. Put trans in gear and take off the nut. Twist the u-joint half back and forth as you pull back. That will expose the driven gear which is removed by taking off the hex cover opposite where the cable attaches.

The drive gear is pressed onto the front 1/2 of the u-joint. If it is ok leave in place and replace the driven gear. If not carefully take off the gear and replace.

Re install the gears and other parts in the opposite order as removed.

It the propeller shaft has any noticeable up and down or side to side movement the bushing is shot and should be replaced. Also if less than 1/2 pint of lube is drained the seal behind the bushing is shot and should be replaced. The parts are available from FS or Billy Possum.

Thanks everyone, I'll get on that within the next few days.

Y'alls repair manuals must be different than mine. Mine aren't much more than 100 pgs long and don't do more than simple repairs.

We have two repair manuals. One printed by Chevrolet. The same as you have. The other is not printed just resides in the gray matter. Took 30+ years to get it to its current state and many more to add more chapters.
