rbl2, The main gear and the driven gear? I have a couple of complete 28 transmissions in the garage, I will look in the shop manual and then if the text isn't too clear I will check on one of the spares, I bought the transmissions two years ago to rebuild and haven't touched them yet. (I haven't done a lot of what I wanted to for a year.)

Rbl2, I don't think it will be necessary to pull the transmission. the transmission is qite accessable from underneth the car and also when the floorboard is removed. To get to the main speedometer gear I am sure the torque tube bell connector can be slid back and the U joint parted.

rbl2, first are you sure the problem is in the gears, or is part of yours missing?.
Looks simple enough to me, The directions are in the 1928 repair manual. No needle bearings in this part, you don't need to get into the gear case itself.
First remove the driven gear from the right rear of the tranny, before you part the torque tube and U joint. It has a hex sided place to put a box end wrench, it appears much like the 49-54 driven gear housing. this will keep from stripping the small driven gear when you pull the front U joint half. It appears, to me, that the main speedometer gear will come out with the front U joint yolk off the splined rear transmission shaft. The speedometer gears look like they are inside the U joint front bell housing.
