I have a set of correct NOS GM leaf springs with covers for my 39 Mstr Dlx. It's been more than 25 years since I last removed leaf springs. How about some quick reminders and advice as I prepare to tackle this job.

Thanks, as always!

Before you get the vehicle off the ground loosen the Ubolts, it may be a squeeze under there but the vehicle is more stable on its wheels than on stands.
Lift chassis end high enough that wheels hang just off the floor and solidly support chassis. Undo Ubolts on 1 side completely then shackle pins on the same side swap springs over and tighten. Repeat on the other side. Lower the chassis.
If the spring on top of axle retighten the Ubolts. If the spring under axle and you can raise the wheel by the spring close to Ubolts retighten Ubolts.
After 200 or 300 mile retighten Ubolts as a precaution, they will settle slightly.

Thanks Tony. On the sedan, the leaf springs are under the rear axle. I also see I'm going to need two shackle kits and two new front bushings. I suppose there's no sense in using the old ones. NAPA says they have the rear kits, but it looks like I'll need to order the front bushings from Chevs of the 40s.

Be careful in removing the old bushings. Some may be removed easily while others require some tricks. An air gun is helpful and you may have to revert to a hack-saw blade to provide room to remove. Careful not to cut into the spring or shackle.

If I had known that growing old would be this much fun---I'd have done it sooner!
