can't seem to get from 1st to 2nd and 3rd gear on my 51. What do I need to focus on? Are there bushings that need replacement or do the rods need adjustment? rdz69aol

I'm not sure I understand your problem, but if you can't get from the 1st/Rev area of nuetral to the 2nd/3rd area of neutral, look at the shifter box under the hood on top of the column. Watch it while someone trys to shift gears inside the car. If it is not working properly, you should see the problem right away. These get worn and do strange things. Also yes, there are bushings which could need replacement. I would't rush to adjust any rods, they were probably working properly at this length sometime in the past and will work again if everything else is in good order.

Mike, I think you've got it. The box is open. What am I supposed to be looking for? I won't touch the rods.
