I am looking at a 65 ss chevelle that is for sale and asking price is $24,000. The car has a lot of nice options: matching # 283, 4 speed, working A/C, PS, PB, padded dash, wood wheel, etc. The car was redone in the early 90's and still looks good. The interior is white/aqua and exterior is white. I have been out of Chevelles for some time and wondered if this is fair market for a car like this. I know it is hard to determine without seeing and driving but is this price in the ballpark?

According to the current edition of "Old Cars Price Guide" that's right on for a #2 (out of 6 categories) car, if it's a convertible.

The hardtop, which I presume you're looking at in that you don't mention it's a convertible (also in #2 condition) would be $19,600.

Please note, I'm simply using #2 condition as an example. Altho the owner's (seller's) "want" their car to be a #2 and maybe in delusion "think" their car is a #2, MOST cars simply aren't REAL #2's. More like in-between #2 and #3, at best. Which, of course, would reduce the 'value' thousands of dollars. Just for the record, so to speak, #1 cars (according to the Price Guide definition) are basically show cars that go from place-to-place in enclosed trailers.

Personally, I couldn't spend that kinda money for a 283; altho the working A/C option with a 4-spd is intriguing.

My "logic" tells me it's a 283 because of the color combo. Not many 327 buyers went there. More Black or Red or Marina Blue.

Negotiate HARD and you may wind up with an interesting car at a more 'reasonable' price. Say, around $15 or so. Which is what I figure it's 'worth' without the benefit of seeing it "in person."
