A good friend of mine has just crossed over from the dark side - from a F*rd to a 38K, all original '67 Impala with a 283 V-8 and yes, I'm already working on him to join the VCCA. In looking over his car, we noticed the oil filter was the old metal canister type with an insertable toss-away oil filter element. Neither of us being familiar with the details of this era Chevy's, we were surprised that it wasn't set-up for the modern screw-on toss away filters. The questions are:
1) Is this filter set-up correct for a '67 283 ?
2) Is there an adapter made to allow use of the new style filter? If so, could you give us a lead on a probable vendor?
3) When were the small blocks changed to the screw-on filters?

Thanks for your help,

-Bob

bowtiebob,

our '63 impala 327/300 came with that cartridge type filter...I think I got tired of the mess around '74 and installed an adapter to use a spin on...it's a lot easier and cleaner to change, but sometimes I wish I'd had the smarts to at least keep the old parts...

The 1968 cars were the first to use the throw-away filters.Trucks a little later. The adapters are available.Try NAPA or ? first. The original carts. are also available --AC141.They are not that difficult to change.Much eaiser than sucking out the canister on a 6 cyl. and have a larger filtering area than the throw-aways.I change mine in my '57 every 2 years. They recommended every 6000 miles when new.

Thanks, Chevrolet & Chevy Nut - I knew someone would help me out with this one and I'll pass the info on to my friend.

Gene, you're absolutely right about having to suck the oil out of the 6 cyl. filter cannister. The first time I was faced with that task, I took my wife's turkey baster, which worked great. Unfortunately, I forgot to tell her it was now a car tool and when she found it missing a few months later when ready to baste the Thanksgiving turkey, I really caught hell !!!! \:\( \:\( \:\(

The AC filter (installed in 1950) on my '50 has a drain plug on the bottom.I don't remember them being there back then.I sell oil suction guns for $9.95 -made by Plews. Many parts stores carry them.Great for many things. Also have a turkey baster looking battery filler that I use for sucking out the brake fluid when I change fluid.

I have one of those MityVac vacuum pumps to bleed the brakes with and also a larger container that can be used to suck out brake fluid, oil filters, even tranny grease, (just make sure you don't fill the bottle to the top and suck dirty stuff into the pump) I don't know how I got along without it all these years.
A ICU male nurse friend of ours uses one of those huge syringes to inject green slime into his mower tires to seal the sticker holes (we have stickers, aka grass burs, in Texas that will penetrate a tractor tire.)

and don't let the little lady know it would make a turkey baster to end all turkey basters!

The filter that goes into the 1967 canister is an AC P141.They are available "fresh" at most any major parts store.
