The time has come to drill the holes in my reproduction 31 rear fenders for the right and left taillights. Bill has a rough template on his 1931 site but the measurements are not lining up with my fenders. Could be the way we are measuring or differences in the fenders. Has anyone done this job and save their measurements? Any advice on doing this job would be appreciated.

Thanks Dave

I recently did the same thing using Bill's templates and it came out fine. My fenders were new steel ones from Dale Wahl. I believe the same tooling is now owned by ammuscle on ebay. Are you using the same new fenders? Are you sure they're '31 fenders?

Hope it works out.

All the Best, Chip

I bought them from Bow Tie a few years ago and they matched up to the rusty ones I took off. I think the BowTie was sold and may now be Ammuscle. It could be the way I am measuring since from the lip of the fender to the body measures 12" and Bill's dimensions add up to 11 1/8.

I didn't re-check the measurements, but I remember that you want to ERROR towards the outside of each fender. It's better to have a small gap between the bracket and the body welting. Otherwise you could end up with the bracket too tight against the body.

A quarter inch "extra" would be a safe measurement when you finally decide to mark your spot. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks Bill. I think the lights look right using the outside measurement and it gives the gap you describe. I'll start with the little top hole and go from there.

Tail light holes drilled and they look good to me. The only guess work was how far up the top hole was from the bottom of the large center hole. I probably over thought it but patching holes in new fenders was not something I wanted to do.

Thanks for the input.
