I am in the market for a car carrier trailer, in good condition.

Bed of trailer must be 16' to 18' in length.

Electric brakes and dual axles are a must.

Please email what you may have, with pics, to

bobg1951chevyaaellijaycm

Thanks, Bob.

BG,

It just seems to me that the above statement needs a bit of explantion in support of such a notion. So I'll bite: Why is that?

Thanks.

I am BG, but not the BG who made your statement of concern.

Instead, I am the BG who started this thread.

I have not yet made my trailer purchase, but am discovering the used trailers hold their prices well ....... so, to purchase a new trailer is close in cost to a used trailer price. dance

The most often replaced items on a used trailer are tires and brakes. Buying say a five year old trailer for around $1000.00 (probably won't happen) will put you in position for both items above within a couple of years. At that time you will then have around $2200.00 into the seven year old used trailer. As posted above you can buy a new one for that amount and get at least six years with just minimum maintenance.

For most trailers the cost of a set of tires is $400-500 for radials. Bias ply are maybe $100 less. You can buy new backing plates with magnets and shoes for $60 each doesn't take much to switch them out. So the replacement parts are not the $1000+ suggested.

I have a flat bed car hauling trailer approaching 30 years old. I estimate approximately over 1/4 million miles on that puppy. Recently blasted, painted, re-decked (fourth time) and switched axles from 3500lb to 5200lb at a cost of $1800. Got tired of switching or straightening those flimsy 3500lb spindle/axles. The trailer is better than I can buy today for nearly twice the money. BTW I have brakes on both axles and have had for nearly the entire time I have had the trailer. Yes I added brakes for the second axle. Cheap insurance for when the next idiot pulls in front of me or stops suddenly. Locking up the trailer and truck brakes stop the rig in an amazingly short distance. Have had to do it a few times.

In my opinion buying an over built trailer (structurally) is like money in the bank. Too many have adequate but flimsy materials. If buying one, either new or used, look over the structure carefully. As I have advised several others 5200lb axles are a plus and well worth the extra cost. Reputable builders will make sure the rest of the trailer will hold up to the loads approaching the max. capacity of the axles. If a new trailer have it rated (registered) as 7000lb or less irrespective of the axle capacity. Can make a big difference in license fees, inspection, etc.

I also opt for wooden decks. They are not as slippery in the rain, will accept a lot more different loads, can be modified (like adding planks to be able to raise the vehicle so a bare frame can be driven over and hauled at the same time. Tire stops nailed or screwed to the deck, etc. Yes it is necessary to replace the deck every 10 years or so.

For enclosed trailers, for hauling cars are there special trailers you need or will any enclosed trailer work? Assuming of course the size has to be adequate. Is there differences between enclosed trailers?

There are plenty of differences in enclosed trailers. Some use "T" or "Z" posts and others rectangular tubing for the walls and ceilings. Some even wood pieces in corners (very bad idea). Spacing can be 12" or 16" or wider. Some use exterior plywood (underside painted or not) others treated plywood on floors. Then there are "I" beam and rectangular tubing for frames. Axles can be spring or torsion suspension. Standard height is 6 1/2 feet. Might not be enough height for our older Chevys.

The decision on which to buy depends on how it will be used. Mainly as a storage shed or to safely transport vehicle(s) to a remote destination? More $$$ on the right stuff can pay-off in certain situations.

Chipper, your knowledge of trailers is impressive ..... and important to a prospective buyer, like me.

For me, it must be an open trailer.

All good info, for all trailer buyers out there. dance

I have owned several trailers and pulled RV and car haulers probably 1/2 million miles over the past 60+ years. You should learn something even if only casually interested. I happen to be a bit more than casually.

BG,

Yes, my mistake. I was referring to the Bagy Grand and just shortened it to "BG."

I really don't understand why one would make such a statement about buying a used trailer with some explantion as to how they arrived at that opinion. stressed

Sorry,
Charlie computer

Just my opinion but you'll spend over 2/3 the cost of a new trailer for a used trailer that you don't know the history of. A brand new 18' PJ brand will set you back ~$3K. A used trailer will set you back over $2. I know that for a fact because I went to many area auctions trying to buy a used trailer. I ended up buying a new trailer for less than used ones were selling for after trading in my 14' single axle trailer. It may be different in other parts of the country but that's the way it is around here.

and as I previously mentioned- brand new 18' trailers in the DC area are 1950.00

you'ld have to be a glutton for punishment, to go buy a used one when the new ones are sooooooooooo inexpensive.

So yes Tiny, I agree!

Babe Grand, Do you have a dealer name or website or something I can make contact with, in the D.C. area ?

Spoke with a Penske Leasing mechanic recently and he said that the car trailers they rent are scrapped after six years no matter what condition they are in. So that they don't get re-used they are cut in halve. Most likely due to liability and repair cost.

Interesting fact.

I can imagine some folks have a tendency to beat the snot out of a rented trailer, like anything else that is not personally owned.

Even then, if personally owned, the care given may not be up to par.

A good fact to know.
