I have been fighting this problem of my clutch chattering for a couple of years on my 31 std coupe. The clutch facing was replaced in the early 80's. The car was running and preformed correctly and then went into storage until 2005. The engine,trans, clutch all have been restored and I drove the car a couple of hundred miles before the problem started. On start up in the spring a few years ago the clutch problem started.
I have had the clutch out once and found no oil or any visible problems. I cleaned the lining with brake cleaner as per Chippers suggestion, reinstalled, and had no change in operation. I have tried slipping the clutch with no apparent change.
In reverse backing up on the garage slab sometimes the clutch chatters hard enough to make a loud metal clanking sound,jerking violently.
My garage is heated and dry.
I have checked motor mounts and they are tight.
Broken springs in the clutch have been suggested.
Before I pull the clutch out again are there any suggestions from others who may have had similar problems.

Check the fit of the splines on the disc and shaft.

Does the 31 clutch have the solid disk with no springs? If so maybe the wave formed into the disk has flattened and needs to be reformed. Could happen with long storage.

The original disc was solid and with no wave spring.

I was curious as my 1929 has solid disk but the steel is formed with a slight wave which can flatten and cause chatter. Service bulletins show how to reform the wave with a piece of wire and a vice. I guess they had changed by 31.

Both my cars are early 1929 with floating clutch linings that are not riveted to the disk and the disk has a wave formed into it. I also have original replacement clutch plates that have riveted linings and have the same wave formed into the plate as well. From original Chev literature I have apparently the wave is to allow progressive gripping of the lining to reduce grabbing and chatter. Instructions are provided to reform this wave if it flattens out over time. I haven't seen any of the new repro stuff.

Hello ThreeWindow,
With engine off eliminate other than clutch issues by rolling vehicle in neutral without the clutch pedal being pushed in. If all rolls smoothly forward and reverse then, push clutch pedal in and roll vehicle forward and reverse both in neutral and with gears selected 1,2,3,R. If all rolls smoothly still then verify clutch disk and/or pressure plate issue occurs when operating vehicle with the engine running. Seeing as you have inspected the disk already, double check it. The throw-out bearing and pressure plate will need inspection also.
