First of all, thanks so much for all the help you folks are providing a novice! Here is my next question: How do you remove the headlamp rim from the headlamp? Do you simply pull or twist it to get it off? I just want to make sure I do it correctly so I don't damage it. Thanks again for all your help!

To remove the head light rim , twist anti clockwise looking from the front of the headlight. There is 4 rivets which hold the rim into receptacles . After the turn , you need to pull the rim forwards. Be carefull not to drop the glass lens when you do this.

When you remove the rims you may need leather gloves to get a good grip on the rim. Press the rim on to the head lamp body and twist thereafter. After removing check that the headlight lense (can also be a round window pane, 4 mm) is hold to the rim by a steele string made like this: (if the system is same as on 1916 cars)

I do not think that the glass retaining ring is a genuine item . It is not listed in any of the 490 parts books up to 1922.

Thank you for this information. The manuals I have do not show how to remove the trim ring. 1917 490 touring car
