After my most recent trip in my 31, I discovered a broken outer front wheel bearing. The race was cracked in two places and a piece of a ball bearing was also present. The curious thing was that the bearing had only been in the car for slightly less then 100 miles. Could this broken bearing have been caused by an improper install after only 100 miles or is this more likely a manufacturing defect? I am trying to figure out if I just buy a single replacement ball bearing or consider upgrading to roller bearings.

Thanks,
John

Replace the broken one and set it up properly, you should be good to go. Recheck the other side.

I have not seen a race that was broken from wear as usually a bearing fails from lack of lubricant and seizes and scores. The only thing I can think of that would cause it to break would be improper installation. I would proceed as posted above.

I would suspect the problem may have been to installation or bearing adjustment. Would not go to the expense of the rollers just for that.
