Does anyone use the Mobil One Extended Performance synthetic oil? It is listed as having a 15,000 mile warranty when used with the Mobil One Extended Performance filter. I am not thinking about stretching my oil changes that far as I already use the Mobile One Advanced full synthetic and change it at around 5,000 miles. While some outlets get 12-15 dollars more for five quarts of the extended performance oil it is listed on the Walmart site for only $2.24 more for all five qts. than the advanced full synthetic. As I only drive about 9,000 miles per year I am giving serious consideration to using the Extended Performance oil and only having to change the oil once a year. Doing so would save about $30.00 and still have plenty of oil life.

Mobil makes three levels of synthetic oils.
Mobil Super, Mobil 1 and Mobil ! Advanced synthetic.
The Advanced is the only one where they advise going beyond the manufactors specified milage.
The frequency of your changes would depend on the outside temperature and length of your average trips. If most of your normal trips are less than 10 miles or temperature below freezing I would not be comfortable running a whole year or 9000 miles.According to Mobile the Advanced contains more deterent and additives to give it longer life.
Another factor would bd be if you take a 50 or 100 mile trip, say once a month, to cook the condensation out of the oil.

Thanks Gene for your insight. I do a mix of driving with some short trips and some highway driving. The most miles are highway while I realize the local short ones are the ones that shorten the oil life.

You could also consider using a Dexos (GM Approved) oil. 90% of oils are Dexos today. Some oil companies ddon't want to pay GM the "fee" for have the Dexos name but the oils are approved anyway as long as it says for service SN.
The Dexos oils are part synthetic and GM says they are good for up to 10,000 miles or one year. From what Ihave seen in dealerships (engines apart) 5000 miles or twice a year would be safer.

I changed the oil this AM and used the Mobil-1 extended performance and the Mobil-1 extended life filter. I was 200 miles over my 5000 goal so i wanted to get it done. I'll wait until I reach the 5000 mark again and the see how close I am to a year.

If I were to try for a year oil change I would have used that combination. I do use Mobil 1 filters and run them for two oil changes.
In filter tests I have read it is one of the better long life filters.

I have never been comfortable doing an oil change without changing the filter even on my wifes Honda and I have the dealer do the service. She only puts on 6000 miles a year, and most is short trips, but it reaches operating temp in less than five minutes or one mile. My silverado is almost the same perhaps 5-7 minutes and two miles and that's with an outside temp of around 32 degrees.

Each of our daily driver cars (2) are driven approx. 10,000 miles per year, perhaps a bit less.

I guess I'm JUST a diehard guy who was brought up on 3,000 mile oil changes with a new AC filter.

My attempt at extended oil service was not satisfactory. By 6000 miles I had used two quarts of oil and it was another 1/2 low. I did another oil change with filter and standard oil. At 1500 miles I am now 3/4 of a quart low. After consulting with the dealer he advised that a quart in 2000 miles meets Chevrolet standards and is not considered excessive. Also he advised to follow the oil schedule that bob1951chevy follows and change every 3000 miles. There is a valve cover "fix" that may help but it's discouraging at best to have to spend so much time, money, and effort to keep it in presentable condition.

This is a problem with the 8 Cyl.. trucks with cylinder de-activation....2009 models msinly but also other years. The cylinders that "deactivate-plug doesn't fire" run cold causing carbon to form aroind the oil rings. Chevrolet has several "fixes" but none of them really work other than replacing the pistons and rings with improved units. They did have an exended warranty for this but want you to jump through the other fixes first.

I have 0W-30 Mobil ! fuel economy oil in my 2008 3.9 engine with 116,000 mlies. Have about 2000 miles on it and just a 1/2 notch below the add line...I would say it used about 1/2 pint at most.
Your problem is not the oil but the engine.

I am using the same amount of oil regardless of type or brand so am presently using standard 5-20 non-synthetic. If it is going to burn I would rather burn the less expensive oil. Some on the SilveradoSierra site recommend turning off the AFM feature which I will do along with the newer valve cover however I think probably the damage is already done. Time will tell.

"TURNING IT OFF" too late now, the carbon has formed.

YEP. I agree but maybe it will keep it from getting worse. I suppose this is one pitfall for keeping a vehicle for a long term and not putting on a lot of miles. If it does not get worse than a quart every 2000 miles that's only 5 qts a year or equivalent to one oil change. Still much cheaper than rebuilding. I can't see spending big bucks to save $20.00 a year. When I did a Youtube search there were millions of searches for 5.3 oil consumption and tappet noise problems so the problem is quite prevalent despite what GM might admit.

GM recommeded DEXOS oil has been used and recommended by GM since 2011. If it is for service SM and has the GM approved Dexos name on the container it will be of any brand but the oil contain the proper additives to prevent carbon from forming on pistons, Just about all common oils meet the GM Dexos specifications and are part synthetic. The oil compny must pay GM to use the Dexos name. A few brands refuse to pay GM.
The lifter problem is quite rare on that engine but I have seen a few with that problem. Usually a "dirty" engine. The roller on the lifter wears a grove in the cam lobe. Replacing the cam is a big job as the heads must be removed.

Correctio to above. Dexos is rated at SN which is the highest oil rating.

The dealer did the services the first six years and I used Mobil 1 after that except for the last change. The oil I used is rated SN ( Tractor Supply) as I see no benefit in burning expensive oil. Regarding lifter problems there are many Youtube postings for fixes and most do involve flushing "dirty" oil. As long as it does not get worse than a quart in 2000-3000 miles I will just live with it and change the oil at the 3000 mile interval with the least expensive oil that meets the SN requirement. That's about three changes a year and much cheaper than an overhaul.

I agree if that is all it uses. Many eexpensive cars today use a quart in 1000 miles and the makers claim it is acceptable.

I did call Chevy Customer Assistance just to be on record. What really irks me is that they knew they had a design problem with the valve rocker cover and instead of notifying customers they try to hide the problem to get the customer past the warranty period. I specifically mentioned the quart in 3000 miles when the dealer was doing the service and got the "that's normal" for that engine. Even if I had pursued it at that time no action by GM would have been taken. Now that the "ticking problem" has gotten worse and I started doing some research it's like opening a can of worms.

steve remember that with gm when it comes time to buy another vehicle.

There is a reason they have lost massively in MARKET SHARE.

I have owned gm olds cutlass supreme 91, Pontiac Bonneville SSEI 96, 2003 chev S10 which I still have . Because their warranty service claims are bad. Even when a government tv show "market place" rips them apart , they use the BILL CLINTON DEFENSE.........DENY DENY .

MESSAGE....Do not piss off the customer because sooner or later you run out of ones to aggravate . IE.........low market share

Reminds me of Sears when they would not change my billing cycle. I'll need the truck to pull my trailer for another eight years so hopefully it will not get worse.

My ticking noise was cam lobe and lifter roller was bad. GM paid for parts only. 2013 silverado 55,000.00 miles. Out of warranty.

You did well to get them to pick up the tab for anything. I have never had an adjustment from a Chevy dealer past the warranty and one was only 150 miles past. Contrast that with a Toyota dealer I recently dealt with who split the cost of a diagnosis charge that I thought was unwarranted and did not grumble about doing it.
