I bought three engines at a swap meet that two look like chevy 216 and one 235 and are trying to find out what year they are, there is some numbers stamped on the milled surface right behind the distributor I2I8598 (216 c.i.), I896845 (216 c.i.), and F1026J (235 c.i.) can any one help.

Don W., do they have any prefix letters on the engine number next to the distributor? and have you found the casting numbers on the block behind the starter, I find it eaiser to find the casting number on the head, at least on later engines, but of course heads can be switched Here is a site I use for identification of Chevy sixes.

please try it. ( Some of the VCCA folks on this site were involved with putting this info on the net.
