Jamma, There are several ways, the engine number is stamped on a milled flat area just aft of the distributor, and a casting number is behind the srarter, also there is a casting number on the manifold side of the head, near the valve cover, also the valve cover is a clue if it is bolted down with four machine screws, two on each side thru the gasket it is a 54 or newer, also the 1953 3 speed had babbit rods and it was a low pressure engine and the 53 Powerglide was equiped with a full pressure 235 ci engine, the 50.51.and 52 powerglide cars were equiped with a 235 babbit rod low pressure engine. Post any numbers you can find on the engine and post them here with a good discription of where they are and how they appear size and type, someone will look them up and reply back.

Right side lower part of block L AA6495I52GM on top left side of the head 3701887 GM10. I am a beginner at this, so thank you very much for all your input. What's the difference between the low pressure and high besides pressure; and what about the tryanny? How can I tell what kind or size. Thanks again MackMan, LilJohnny & Junkyard Dog!

And this was my reply back:

Jammagarcia, the difference in Low and high pressure engines are,
Low Pressure Engine:
oil pump pumps a max of around 20 psi hot,low pressure babbit rods ( no inserts babbit is applied directly to rod journals,) also the rods lube by dipping into oil troughs and splashing the oil to to rest of the crankshaft, also nozzles in the pan squirt oil up to lube the engine parts. 235 engines ( powerglide trans.) up thru 1952 and 216 engines ( standard 3 speed manual trans.) thru 1953.

High pressure engines:
have insert bearings and rods and mains oil thru oil being pumped thru the crankshaft under high pressure up to 60 psi. cold and 30 psi hot. all 1953 235 Powerglide engines and all engines from 1954 up.
The powerglide was Chevys first auto transmission , no clutch peddle has Lo, Dr, and R gears on selector. Three speed manual has a clutch and must use clutch to shift, Reverse, 1st, 2nd, and high gears with shifter on steering column. also the powerglide equiped cars have a different rear end ratio 3.55 to 1 for powerglide and 4.11 to 1 for the standard 3 speed transmission.
as to the numbers you sent the 3701887 head shows to be a 1953 235 powerglide engine head (high Oil Pressure) and the LAA prefix to the engine number is a 1953 235 block originally in a 1953 235 powerglide engine, which is considered the "good" engine.
I don't have a break down on the plant and date of manufactor, but I am sure if you post these numbers on the Chevy Chatter forum you will find out that info. hope this helps you understand your Chevrolet.
