The fans were a common accessory in the early and mid '30's as they were used for both defrosting the windshield and summer cooling.They became less common in the later '30's due to the defroster being connected to the heater and directing warm air directly to the windshields.
These are the instructions for mounting the fan in 1939 - I am sure that by 1948 they would be the same.
Installation-Attach by means of brackets supplied, to either upper center part of the instrument panel or the steering column.-(as a note -on a 1939 with the optional column gear shift or 1940-48 cars the column may not work due to the shift controll rod being above the column)-.The cowl (dash) installation is the most practial as this way the defroster can be directed against either half of the windshield.To do this simply drill three small holes in the top of the dash according to the template furnished.Self-tapping screws are supplied.
