Is it true that there is no oil pump in a 216 cid engine? If not then how does the top end get lubricated? Does this restrict speed or rpm?

p.k. thanks for the reply. I have just aquired this car and know next to nothing about the engine yet and am just going by what some local "experts" are telling me.

The Chevrolet engine up to 1953 had a pump that produced a lower pressure. The main and camshaft bearings were lubricated under higher pressure (about 15 pounds at higher speeds). The rods were lubricated by oil troughs in the pan.Dippers on the bottom of the connecting rods scooped the oil from the troughs. The oil was pumped into the troughs by little pipes connected to the oil supply. At higher engine speeds the pipes squirted the oil directly into the dippers (1935 and up models).
The normal ot oil pressure on a (1937-39) at about 50 MPH will be about 13 pounds on your 1939 and 2 0r 3 pounds at idle. Will be much higher with cold .thick oil.Infact will peg the 30 pound mark on the gauge when first starting the engine.

Maybe your "Local advisors" are old Fix Or Repair Daily fans. I have some and when I say I have a 28 sedan, they say a Model A? I say NO a real car, a Chevrolet!...Then I hear a mumble ..."Them old Chevys had too much wood."

Chevys are good!

Wood is good, saw, shape, sand, drill, nail, screw and glue it!

Wood is real!

If your "local experts" told you that your Chevy didn't have an oil pump, they may be "local" but they're certainly not experts - no way. Those guys just keep repeating the myths that have been published and repeated over and over. Putting down babbit rods, slow vacuum shifting, no full pressure oil system,......etc...

Experts are former drips under pressure. Their knowledge has been proven again.
