My fuel line leaks at the carb fitting .
Its a flared line that I did myself with a flaring tool.
At the fuel pump its a factory flared end that seems to seep a little bit as well.
should I use compression fittings ,with the little rings?

which means I would have to replace the the fitting on the pump and the carb.
or should I just twist harder on everything?

Thanks Stanman by the way....just got my 1931 dlx coupe started for the first time since I brought it home ten years ago. Its taken alot of hard work and money. It looks great and sounds great..all parts have been restored and I just have to put on all the cool stuff, fenders, running boards, interior and chrome.

I am going out on a limb with this one. I think that I would go down to the Mom and Pop Auto parts store, or call The filling Station, and see if they don't have some fuel lines made up with factory flares and nuts, take the old line and the fittings on each end and get some new fittings. It isn't a fun thing to go driving around with leaking gasoline under the hood, it will smell bad and if you have the boss riding with you, she won't be happy,...specially if black smoke and flames start coming out from under the hood!

stanman,
If your car is a 1931 it originally had compression fittings and not flared. I would suggest changing to them. Single flare fittings are much more prone to leaking.

Thanks Guys
I'm starting over, and will remake the whole thing.
I guess there's a reason the only leaks are are from the flared ends.
I'll get some over the counter gas line with proper fittings.
Thanks again
Stanman

I get 5/16" brake line from local parts house and make gas line from it. Soft enough to make many bends by hand or 90 deg. bends are easy if you have a bending tool. Just remember to pull the tubing back a little bit when setting the ferrules for the first time. If you forget then cut or grind off a little from the end so the tubing does not bottom out before the ferrule fully seats. It is a common problem resulting in leaks.

Is brake line softer metal than standard steel fuel line?

Don't think so but never tried them side by side. Besides all the gas lines I have had were already bent and therefore partially work hardened.

An added benefit of the brake line is that it's coated to help prevent rust.

...and you don't have to paint it, so it can look like the original "tinned" steel. I use the same stuff. You can also get it from NAPA in 25-ft and 50-ft rolls.

All the Best, Chip
