Just inherited a 1940 Special Deluxe Cabriolet with a 40+ resto and engine rebuild and noticed that when the engine is running, the distributor moves. And to clarify it does not rotate except when the vacuum advance does so. It actually moves around. I am thinking it may be the bushing in the block that the shaft slips into. If so does anyone know where to get one and can it be removed and installed from up top or via the oil pan?
Any info would be great.

thanx

Hello 40cabriolet, and welcome to Chevy Chatter II!

Since you have a 1940, you may want to post your question in the 1937-42 Forum a little further on down. You'll likely get more responses.

In the meantime, here is a link to some discussions which also talk about distributor movement.

Happy Motoring, and once again, welcome.

Hi There and welcome to Chevy Chatter II. Glad to have you with us!

On your distributor moving around, it could be caused by either a bent shaft in the distributor or the distributor might not be down against the engine block as it should be thus the distributor gear is not engaging the cam gear correctly. By the way, there is no bushing in the block for the distributor.

Also, just for future reference, when you post again you might want to post in the 1937-42 forum instead of here in the 1912-1928 forum. That way more dudes that are into your model year will read your post and they can help you with any questions that you might have.

Good luck with your 1940 cabriolet.

Just put it there too, also just put in a rebuilt distributor and have the same issue.

Then you may not have the distributor seated all the way into the block as it should be.

40cabriolet;
If you have a distributor that is walking around find out now what the cause is. If the distributor gear gets worn it will also wear your cam gear it meets with. If it wears that cam gear, then it's time to pull the cam. A worn cam gear will wearout a distributor gear in no time and vise-versa. Don't drive it till it's fixed.
