Trying to figure out how to remove the steering column from the steering box. Loosened the collar. Have had other columns (non Chevy) that the worm gear just unscrewed from the box but this doesn't want to.

I had the column out of my 30 this fall, remove the wheel and clamp at the dash and the clamp at the gear, then the outer tube will slide up and off. Then to get the gear out I had to drop the exhaust pipe and then the shield between the engine and frame. Next remove the pitman arm then the clamp that holds it to the frame. Then it will drop out under the car.

Thanks Dens. I'm trying to figure out how to get the shaft out of the box. I'll pull the tube off first of course but I can't figure out how to release the worm gear.

Check your shop manual. It gives instructions on how to disassemble the steering box, including the worm gear.

To remove the worm gear after the rest of the parts of the steering box have been removed, simply unscrew the worm gear adjusting nut at the bottom of the gear box and pull out the worm gear and main shaft.
