I am very new to the VCCA and I’m trying to get a feel for how the organization is set up . So please forgive me on asking so many questions. Do most of the judging meets take place out doors? Do most meets have like a tour and a judged show the same weekend?

I for the most part have attended Central Meets. They are outside and we have a tour the day after judging. The only one I know of that was inside was the 2nd Central Meet. There have been a few that the Swap Meet part was held inside.

I have a question on when one checks into the meet and the operations test. What all is tested? Do you test the keys in the doors for example? Also what about the headlights do they test them an also check to make sure they are OEM like T-3s?

When you go through field check we check to see if you have a fire extinguisher, if your headlights work on high and low beam, brake lights work, parking, taillights and back up lights work, turn signals, flashers, license plate light and side markers work, dome and courtesy lights work, if you have a radio does it work, horn works, heat and a/c works, clock works, and if the wipe and washer works.

The detail part comes on the judging field. If you go to the VCCA web site, click Membership Services, go to manuals and click, you will find the Judging Manual and Judging Forms. These will give you all the info you are looking for and should answer any questions you have.

Also when one has their car judged, are you competing against all the other cars in your class? If you get first place what do you receive a ribbon or a trophy?

Each car is compared to the judging sheet with consideration given to try to make the deductions for all vehicles equivalent. The bottom line is that the vehicles are judged separately against the "as delivered" criteria and attempts are made to have a level playing field for all cars.

After judging is over then the higher point vehicles receive awards. The awards may be trophies, placques, ribbons or what ever the sponsoring group decides plus if the VCCA judging criteria and sheets are used with VCCA certified judges then Junior, Senior and Preservation awards given.

Also HPOCF for unrestored vehicles and CDPC driven vehicles can receive VCCA awards also but they are just a certification process not point judging.

The VCCA Judging Manual is available on the main website. It gives detailed information on the entire judging and certification process.

The other guys will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the field entrance check is to protect the club for liability and insurance issues. If something horrible goes wrong, like a fire, or unsafe brakes, or other accident, we are best covered if we have checked the safety of each car before it is allowed on the field. It doesn't matter if the lights or horn etc. are wrong, it matters that they work...

The Field Entrance check is strictly to determine that the components of the vintage Chevrolet are in working condition and are eligible for field judging. Yes, the fire extinguisher is a safety issue.

The field entrance check has nothing to do with safety or insurance. We do not certify the safety of the vehicle. We just want to be sure that everything works.

The field entrance check was started because we had vehicles on the judging field that would not run to drive them off the judging field.

At one time we had the driver shut the engine down and restart it. I'm not sure when they discontinued that process but you are required to drive your vehicle through the field entrance check.

To add to my previous post. At the 15th Anniversary Meet in Colorado Springs, 1976, I was the Safety Director for the meet. I did a courtesy check of the vehicles. I did such things as look at the hoses and belts. The clearance between the brake pedal and floor board. Checked the lights. All I did was suggest that they might want to look into these items and repair or adjust if they thought it necessary. There was nothing in writing to say the vehicle was safe. You would be surprised at some of the things I saw.

I am confused, so all say a regional meet are not certified? Are is every VCCA meet that has judging one that allows you to receive a junior senior award a sanctioned VCCA meet?

Any sanctioned VCCA Judging Meet that uses the VCCA Judging Classes and uses the VCCA Judging Forms should award Junior, Senior, Preservation, HPOCF Certification, and Driver Participation Certification Awards.

Do many judges look for correct headlight bulbs....yes. If you have installed the original style headlight bulb, it just kind of finishes off the car as far as I am concerned. When judging Chevys at a meet, I like it when someone searches for the correct part as simple as a headlight bulb. If you can't find the original style bulb, it is not usually a major point deduction.
