I have a quistion: who can tell me the year of making a spare engine with these following numbered: GM 8338101.6 Eng. Nr 519236.
The oil cap is on the right hand side.

The numbers do not compare directly with any US GM numbers .Teh 1938 had a casting number of 838710...The casting numbers are raised.
The 1937 had the engine number stamped into a flat area next to the fuel pump.The US numbers ran from #1 thru 1187821.

The stamped engine number was behind the distributor from 1938 and up.The 1937-38 had more than one bolt hole next to the distributor to hold down the dist.The 1939 and up only one.The 1937-39 has a cast round oil (about 3 inches long ) distributor valve on the left side of the engine - down behind the exhaust pipe.The 1940 and up has a oval tin plate with three screws.The 1937-40 head has shorter head bolts on the left side.The head is raised in that area on the 1941 and up so they will have all longer head bolts.The 1941-48 head will have the small 10MM thread spark plugs.The other years 14 MM.

A picture of the left side of the engine would be more helpful.

Its a 1937 engine.Would fit a 1938 and 1939 but would not be 100% correct.
The casting number is mis-typed.Its 838101 (for 1937).
