Hi there,
I have now reached the stage of installing the new wiring loom into my 34 chev std 4 door sedan.
I unpacked it and was confronted with a maze of wires and numbered tags, relating to a list of where they go..... wow
The first task is to roughly locate where the loom lies in the car. I have no idea from the tags and numbers just where it is to lay in the chassis etc.
I am looking for a schematic layout drawing at least to show me and get me started on this daunting job.
any ideas where I can find helpful drawings for my Holden bodied car? stressed
regards
Peter

Peter,

Have a look at my posting "encing question-'34 Master" (should have read sequencing) od dec 23 in The Body, sheet metal section. I had asked a similar question.

For US cars the main harnwss exits the bosy next to the steerinf column. From there the front wires go along side of the inner skirt bottom the the lights, etc and the rear heads under the body and more or less follows the inside of the frame rail next to the floor to the rear area

Hi there,
Now have another problem with the loom installation.
I wonder how to start the car.

It has a starter solenoid push button on top of the starter 6 volt motor.
There should be something on the dashboard to start the car?

I have an original electro-lock armored cable to coil switch.
It has 2 keys.
It works by inserting the key and turning clockwise to complete a circuit.
It is not like a modern starter turnkey switch, nothing happens after its turned!

I will need some type of starter push switch and probably wired through a solenoid or something?

Any ideas out there?

Also the generator has 2 terminals on the top. both are the same size, so cant tell which one is + or - , just by looking, so how do I select the correct one for the loom connection.
I'm told that it has a 3rd brush........Omg. what is that?
driving

cheers
Peter

I would think it had a foot starter like the U.S. cars. Is all that missing from your car?

Hi Peter.
My New Zealand 34 Standard Chev also has solenoid mounted on top of starter (original). It has a pull switch on the dash which is energised by turning the key on. Hope this helps.

Hi there,
thank you both for your input.
My car does not have any foot starter gear....nothing.
a friend has a 35 master, Holden body, and that has the foot starter, its a novel way to start it BTW cool

Paul: if the key is turned and the pull switch pulled, does the started then work? do you then push the knob in and the engine runs? or turn the key back to its original position?
I have purchased a small neat push switch for the dashboard and have fitted it in the position that the pull switch would have been.

Because I dont have any foot starter gear, I will use the push button method to enable starting..
I will have to find out if it then has to have a relay switch to make it work with the 6 volt circuit?

Hi Peter,
I'll try to explain how my set uporks. I have owned the car for 45 years, and it had one previous owner. The car was in original condition and I am presently rebuilding it.To start the engine I simply turn the key to the ON position and pull the start switch which is mounted on the dash below the amp and oil gauges. On the engine starting you release the pull/start switch which automatically stops the current going to the starter. To stop the engine you simply turn the key to the OFF position. It has never been fitted with a floor mounted starter switch and to my knowledge all the 34 Chevs in New Zealand have the same setup. Our Chevs were imported in a built up form-right hand drive, from Canada.
What you plan to do should work fine.
Cheers
Paul

My 38 has the foot pedal in front of the gear shift lever not solenoid.

A mate of mine used to own a '33 Master roadster, and it had the pull starter switch on the dash, with the solenoid on the starter motor.I've also re-built starter motors for a '37 Master,'35 Std,and they both had the solenoid on top of the starter motor.
Perhaps this was a feature peculiar to the "Master" series passenger cars and not the commercials?

You may well be right there, full electric start on (some or all) cars and the mechanical on commercials. A friend had a 54 full size truck that had 2 position key and separate press button start where the cars had at least a 3 position key in the same year.

Hi there,
thank you all for your various reply's.

My car has the solenoid mounted on top of the starter and if one was working on the engine, it could be started or turned over via this attachment, by pressing in the button, sticking out of the end.

I have now been informed by a retired NRMA service man neighbor that indeed once the push switch is mounted on the dashboard, that with the correct wiring, once the key is turned, the car will start via the solenoid on the starter motor....phewwwww.

I am still battling with the wiring diagram and a tangle of wires, but in the fullness of time, I will succeed, maybe...

Hi there,
I have now found out that the terminal nearest you when facing the generator is the one that goes to the battery, of in this case to the ammeter, its the large cable.
The other one is a "field cable", smaller in size and not used if the other cable,"large one", goes through the voltage regulator and then to the ammeter. P

Progress here is slow, one amp and a watt at a time......... potty
