A big HELLO from the land down under.I recently brought a GMC Chevy 1946 Maple Leaf Truck. It's going to be a long term project as she's been Knocked around a bit and there is a lot of rust to fix.The engine is stuck well and good. I have removed the gearbox and it rotates freely.I have tried to ID both box and engine but can't seem to find the right info. I sure would appreciate it if someone could help me out with the ID's as I'm totally lost.
The Box has the numbers C37 1 GM 5834141 cast into the case.
The engine has R3812068 stamped near dizzy and 0-20-2 and 839253 cast into the block. The head has 833773 GM 019-2 cast into it.Any help would sure be appreciated,Shane.

Welcome to Chatter.
I dont have the information you request but I am sure that there are several others that do and will answer shortly.
Dont be frightened to ask questions here though there isnt much information on modifications.

I can't find the engine casting number in any of my databases that include any or all GM makes. It has the 839XXX which is a Chevrolet type number. The casting dates would suggest it would be a '42 or '52 or 19?2. But the "O" does not fit. Could it be a "D"? That would be code for April.

The closest number I can find is 3835253 (Chevrolet 48 =96 49 216 FA, GA). At least it has the right final three digits. There are several block casting numbers starting with 839 in the 40s.

These are Canadian numbers. I would suggest contacting David Hayward at .....gmhistorianaabtinternetcm.....he is in England and has a lot of Canadian/import numbers.
Tell him Gene Schneider referred you to him.

Thanks for the replies fellas. It has me stumped also. The 0 could be a D and as you have said Chipper would be April. Thanks for the welcome Tony. Thanks also for the link to David, Chevnut.I'll email the info to him.I'm am pretty new to the Chev Brand as theirs not too many in my neck of the woods.I have only seen one other.
I have not lifted the lid on the g/box yet.Would the numbers on the box identify whether it's a 3 or 4 speed?? Below is a link to some photos of the old girl.Again many thanks for the replies, Shane.

If the trans has a small rod and lever on the shift lever it is a 4 speed. Don't know of a three speed in anything over 1 ton in that era.

Thanks Chipper,It has the lever so it's a four speed.I take it that the small rod and lever is associated with reverse some how?
Chipper this is all new to me so the next dumb question is what would be the shift pattern be?? Would this box have syncros for any of the gears?? Cheers, Shane.

The lever is for the reverse lock out. Pull up lever to shift into reverse. The pattern is an H with Low in the normal reverse position (upper left). Max speed in Low is ~ 7 mph. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd are in the normal positions. Reverse is pull up on lever and shift into 1st position (lower left). In most cases the transmission is used like a three speed. If starting from a stop on a hill or with a heavy load then starting in Low.

The Boss has a '31 Fire Truck with open cab. I have occasionally put into Low, increased idle a tad and then get out run around the truck as it goes down a parking lot then jump back in and drive off. People can't believe it when they see it. Think a turtle can go faster if in a hurry.

As suggested the indications are it is a 4 forward speed box and to select reverse lift the small lever in neutral allows the stick to move further left to select reverse. To my knowledge that box was optional in the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks and the only box in 1 ton and bigger.

Hi Tony,It's all starting to make sense now.If the truck was a goer it would have given me a chance to experiment a little to work things out.The engine is well and truly seized and to separate the box from the B/housing was a comedy of errors in itself.I can see a big learning curve as I move forward with this project,Shane.

The truck is either a 1941, 1942. 1945 or 1946.

A swivel socket will make it easier to get the pressure plate bolts off with a stuck motor,I had to get use one when getting a bellhousing off a 41 that sat with the motor full of water since the early 60s and turned into a two saturday event.

Hi Chevgene,1946 /47 is the truck build date and whilst talking with David Hayward there is every chance that the engine is one from a war vehicle and possibly fitted to the truck post war.
Junkyardjeff, I'm hearing ya mate.I like yourself spent a hole lot of time getting the box separated. It may have been the amber fluid in small bottles that I used to Hydrate myself with whilst doing the job.I keep telling myself that the beer is strictly for medicinal purpose only. But as this thing was causing a few headaches I felt OK to use it.Thanks for the welcome Fellas,Shane
