My question has to do with the mounting location of an '32 Accessory Stirling Electric Dashboard Clock.

I gather that it was typically mounted on the passenger side of the dashboard. However, the Mrs. suggested placing the clock on the driver's side to the left of the steering column (probably in line with the freewheeling knob). The right side of the dashboard is getting crowded.

Does the placement really matter?

The standard placement of the clock as shown in the installation instructions or Service News is on the passenger side. However, you can place it anywhere that there is room on the back of the dash for the clock body and it can be viewed easily.

If you have the car judged you may receive a point deduction if the judge knows the recommended installation position (on the passenger side) and decides to take the deduction (one or both are doubtful as most judges don't have enough knowledge of the exact recommended position).

Since you have a '32 Landau Phaeton, which is a rare and desirable car, I would mount the Sterling Electric clock in the correct location on the passenger side of the instrument panel.

Thank you both for your advice. Your insight has provided me perspectives I had not considered.

The bronze St. Christopher medallion on the right hand side of the dashboard predates 1949 and our family's ownership of this LP. If the clock face will cover the mounting holes for the medallion, I will relocate the medallion and place the clock.

I have copies of the 31-33 Service News. However, I have neglected to study the content of these volumes until I was reminded of the wealth of information that they contain. The instructions for mounting the clock are on page 44 of the June 1931 SN. The figure 4 shown there is not entirely clear in the depiction of the instrument cluster (the size of the holes and relative positioning of the holes within the cluster). I assume that the dimension of 9" is from the center of the fuel gauge.

That is correct. The centerline of the 1/2" hole for the clock is located 9 inches from the centerline of the gasoline gauge.

Did the Stirling Electric Dashboard Accessory Clock have a luminous face since the clock does not appear to be lit as the instrument gauges were?

If it is so dark you can't read the clock, you are out too late anyway.
