Is there a trick or preferred sequence in assembling the packing and the shaft? Looks like thay should be inserted around the shaft while it is already in place. The shop manual dpesn't go into that much detail. blush

1934 Master. I figured it out, pushed the first packing in then ran the shaft through, then the spacer, then the other packing.Needed to tap a bit on the second packing to set it deep enough so that I could start the nut. Looks like it is going to work.

There should be two packings, then the spacer and then two more packings.

The new packings were as thick if not more than two of the ones I took out. Maybe they weren't separated.

Does that front bushing need to be pressed in to contact with the housing?

The bushing is against the housing. What you see there is a fiber washer.

Pat, I believe the fiber washer goes between the impeller and the pump housing... i.e., you slide it onto the impeller shaft before inserting the shaft into the housing. I could be wrong, but I think that's right. Any of the experts able to help out?

All the Best, Chip

You are right. I just put that one there to cushion the thrust between the pulley and the bushing.

Pat, while certainly minor, the fiber washer COULD throw off your pulley alignment. Also, I believe the water pump should be black. Not nitpicking, just trying to help before It Is installed.

The fiber washer needs to be removed since the front bushing has a thrust flange already, and with the extra washer in place it will throw your pulley out of fan belt alignment as P.U. Guy suggested.

The water pump was painted engine color (gray) at the factory.

Opps, just checked and Skip Is correct the water pump Is engine gray. This is what I have per Chevgene some time back:

Transmission-black
Top generator adjusting bracket-engine color
Lower gen. bracket-black
Water pump & pulley-engine color
Fan and oil filler/breather tube-black
Oil dist. valve and exposed portion of oil line above housing-engine color
Intake manifold-engine color-as were bolts and hardware that hold It in place.

Note: a 1936 proving ground picture show fan as gray, but most are black.

I just got this post forward to me at work and I'm going to start something here.

So I'm working on an article for the G&D about the color of items on the early 6 engine. I would like to point out that there were variations in the color of components from what I can tell. First one is the grease cup on your water pump Pat. It should be gray like the engine. You need to think about how the completed assembly was shipped to Chevrolet and when it was painted as a unit by Chevrolet. The grease cup would not have been installed on the line, it was a water pump unit. Second, as to the fan color, they were both from what I can tell right now. I have factory photos and cars which show it as being gray or black. I know that Chip or Skip will disagree with me saying this, but this is what I have found. I know that Skip 32 has a gray fan and Chip’s 31 fire truck has a gray fan, also know of a 34 with a gray fan. More in the G&D or if you would like to personally talk about this, give me a call.

That is not totally correct. Depending upon the factory some of the grease cups were added before the engine was painted and some of the grease cups were added later. I have seen original grease cups that were painted engine color, nickel plated or natural steel. Some of the Chevrolet literature supports the above as well.

Oh Brucie.....how soon you forget! I told you many, many years ago that the fan color was usually dark-blue gray but some were also black depending upon the factory.

J.D., That hit me later. I'll pull the pulley & take that washer out. That makes a lot of sense. As for the color....we'll see.

Cool move on removing the fiber washer.

On the color, you have the pump painted engine color so you should be fine in that department.

Hey,
Brucie buddy,

I hate to write this but, agree with the doggie on those two issues. Both black and engine color were original. For that matter the road draft tube is another that is found both engine color and black.
